The WordPress editor is the heart of the content management system because it is where the content of your website comes to life. It allows you to create, edit and design posts and pages with ease – without having to write a line of code.

In recent years, the WordPress editor has evolved significantly. The introduction of the so-called Gutenberg editor ushered in a new era of content management in WordPress.

What is the Gutenberg editor?

The Gutenberg editor, named after the inventor of modern letterpress printing, Johannes Gutenberg, revolutionizes the way content is created in WordPress. Instead of the traditional text-based editor, a flexible, block-based user interface is offered here. This allows users to design content visually, similar to creating pages or posts with a website builder.

The advantages of the WordPress editor lie in the simple and intuitive operation as well as the numerous options for individualization and flexible design of your content. The fact that the content is summarized in blocks also creates the foundation for easy handling of responsive designs.

The editor gives you the freedom and flexibility to create professional-looking content without having to be an expert in web design or web development. For example, you can easily implement the following things:

  • Write and format texts.
  • Insert images, videos and other media.
  • Structure content better through paragraphs, headings, quotes, lists, etc.
  • Create layouts with columns and groups.
  • Add buttons and widgets.
  • Customize colors and typography.

We want to introduce you to the most important areas of the WordPress editor and give you tips and tricks so that you can easily create or optimize your own website.

Working with blocks: text, image, video, etc.

The Gutenberg editor is available to you when creating or editing your posts or pages. For example, if you add a new page using the “Create new page” function under Pages > All pages, the extensive options for designing your website are immediately available to you.

Depending on the template you choose, you can then start with a completely new page or define an initial structure using a template. No matter which start you choose, with the Plus you can add a new block where you want.

Paragraph

The paragraph block is used to easily enter and format the texts of your website. Use it in a variety of places.

Headline

Use different hierarchy levels for your text headings to better structure the content.

List

The List block lets you add ordered and unordered lists to make information more organized.

Quote

You can use a quote to emphasize relevant information, as these passages of text are particularly highlighted.

Picture

You can upload and insert images into your content, with various media orientation and size settings.

Gallery

A gallery allows you to display multiple images. You have the option to choose different layouts

Video

The video block allows you to integrate videos into your website. Be it by uploading files or embedding external links.

Buttons

Buttons allow you to easily create interactive buttons that prompt visitors to take action.

Columns

The column block allows you to divide content into multiple columns to achieve an attractive and structured display.

Once you have decided on a block and inserted it at the desired location, you will have more editing options depending on the selected function.

On the one hand, these appear directly in the editor for the respective block, on the other hand, you also have a column with further settings in the sidebar on the right. For example, you can move the block, adjust the formatting, add links or change the typography and spacing.

Embedding content

We’ve already touched on it briefly with the video format: Sometimes it makes sense that you don’t upload content directly to WordPress, but rather embed it from other platforms on your website. This is particularly useful, for example, with multimedia or interactive elements. Here are a few examples:

  • Social media posts: By embedding posts from your social media channels, you can present users with current content directly on your website and encourage social interaction.
  • Google Maps: Embedding Google Maps provides visitors with location information directly on the website and helps navigate to physical locations.
  • SoundCloud audio files: For example, you can embed SoundCloud audio files on your website to deliver music, podcasts, or other audio content without visitors having to leave the page.
  • YouTube Videos: Embedding YouTube videos in WordPress makes it possible to display videos directly on your website without having to redirect to external pages.

Settings of a post or page

When creating content in WordPress, it is important to not only consider things like the actual text of the post or the structure of the respective page. Additionally, you should also pay attention to the settings that affect the categorization and visibility of your content.

In the right sidebar of the editor you will find the appropriate options to give your pages and posts the right settings.

Status & Visibility

Define the visibility of your page or schedule the publication date for a later date. You can also choose who should act as the author of this page.

Assign the permalink for the corresponding page or post. WordPress provides you with a suggestion based on the title, but you can still customize it.

Categories

Predefined categories can be stored here. These are used to assign your posts to certain topic groups, which you can also filter by.

Tags

In terms of functionality, the keywords are similar to the categories. So-called tags do not have to be predefined, but can be assigned individually in the editor and thus created.

Post image

Under Post image you can select a graphic for the current page or the corresponding post. This is then displayed, for example, when sharing the link or in a post overview.

Text excerpt

At this point you can explain in a few words what your site is about. If you do not use any other plugins for your search engine optimization, this text will be used here.

Discussion

If you have activated the comment function for your WordPress website, you can still define on a post-by-post basis whether you want to allow comments or not.

Tips for using the WordPress editor

The WordPress editor is a powerful tool that gives you the freedom to make your vision for your website a reality without having to be a technical genius.

With a little practice and experimentation, you will soon be able to create content that not only looks good, but also captivates and delights your visitors. So that you can reach this goal quickly, we have summarized tips for using the Gutenberg editor in WordPress for you.

Dashboard

Tip 1: Use keyboard shortcuts

The editor supports various keyboard shortcuts that can save you a lot of time. Look for a list of these shortcuts to increase your efficiency. Feel free to use classics like Ctrl / Cmd + C (copy) or Ctrl / Cmd + Z (undo).

Tip 2: Be willing to experiment

There are a variety of blocks that you may not have discovered yet. Through experimentation you often find new ways to make the content more interesting and appealing and to shape your users.

Tip 3: Use the preview

Although WordPress is a WYSIWYG editor, you still use the preview function regularly to see what your page or post looks like to visitors. This way you can make changes before everything goes live.

Tip 4: Create templates

If you use certain content regularly, create templates or reusable blocks of it. This saves you time because you don’t have to recreate it every time and ensures that the same content is displayed consistently.

Tip 5: Use drag & drop

Use drag & drop to easily change the order of your content or add new blocks. This feature makes dragging and placing the respective sections child’s play.
